Anyone who wants to study medicine in Germany today has three options for getting a study place:
1. About the final grade
20% of the study places go to the Abi-Best. With a grade point average of 1.0 you have a good chance to immediately get a place in Germany. With every higher value after the decimal point, the probability of belonging to these 20% becomes increasingly less.
2. About the waiting time quota
Another 20% of the study places will be awarded after waiting time. Decisive in the calculation are the half years / semesters that have already passed since you graduated from high school. In addition, you have the opportunity to improve your waiting time in addition. So you can, for example, for the training for paramedics, to the nurse or a volunteer service additional waiting semester charge. Nevertheless, despite these bonus points, the average waiting time for most students is still five to six years. Another problem: Since the NC also fluctuates from semester to semester, you can not plan exactly when you will finally get your study place.
3. About the university quota
At 60%, the majority of study places are awarded through the selection procedures of the universities (AdH). Each university has its own selection criteria. This procedure is therefore not uniformly regulated. Some universities only consider the high school diploma, others, however, also include a good score in the medical test and award bonus points for a completed vocational training. Also, for students who want to get their medical study place on the university quota, the Abitur grade is therefore of great importance.
The medical exam as part of the college quota selection process
The medical exam is currently being included in the admission procedure for the Human Medicine degree program at the following universities (in alphabetical order): Bochum, Erlangen-Nuremberg, Frankfurt am Main, Freiburg, Giessen, Göttingen, Halle an der Saale, Heidelberg, Heidelberg-Mannheim, Kassel, Kiel, Cologne, Leipzig, Lübeck, Mainz, Marburg, Munich, Oldenburg, Regensburg, Rostock, Tübingen, Ulm and Würzburg.
If you want to study dentistry, you must pass the medical test at these universities: Erlangen-Nuremberg, Frankfurt am Main, Freiburg, casting, Göttingen, Halle an der Saale, Heidelberg, Kiel, Leipzig, Mainz, Regensburg, Rostock, Tübingen, Ulm and Würzburg.
The medical exam not only tests your suitability for medical studies, but also the performance differences between the students. For this reason, the test is designed very complex: If not all applicants can answer all questions, the particularly high-performance student candidate can excel. This is also confirmed by discussions we have had with graduates of the German medical test: Everyone found the test very demanding and difficult.
The only option without outstanding Abi: accumulate a waiting semester
Without an outstanding high school graduation and possibly sound knowledge of the natural sciences, which you need for the medical exam, you can only get a place on the waiting time quota. The problem of this variant already betrays the name: You have to wait a long time until you are finally admitted to the study – on average, five to six years. So you only start your studies when your fellow students of the same age start their Practical Year with the 1-year Abitur or even begin their internship. By your late start to work life you lose not only valuable lifetime, but you also escape five to six annual salaries of a doctor.
